2016 Audi S5 Review

from the Cars.com expert editorial team

What Is the 2016 Audi S5?

The all-wheel-drive four-seat 2016 Audi S5 is a performance version of the automaker’s A5 model, available as a coupe or convertible. It competes with vehicles like the BMW 435i, Mercedes-Benz C350 coupe and the Porsche Boxster and Cayman. It is available in only one trim, the 3.0T Premium Plus coupe or cabriolet. The Audi A5 is covered separately on Cars.com.

What’s New on the 2016 Audi S5?

For this model year, the S line exterior trim is now standard, and Premium Plus models are outfitted with a Bang & Olufsen sound system. A red top is newly optional for the convertible.

How Does the 2016 Audi S5 Compare to Other Luxury Coupes?

Although it is expected that optional features can significantly bump up the price of a luxury vehicle, there are several features, like a backup camera, that should come standard but don’t here. Because this is a performance vehicle, the torque-vectoring rear differential should also be standard on the S5. Although there are many areas where the S5 shines, it needs a few improvements to stay competitive in the class.

What Features in the 2016 Audi S5 Are Most Important?

The Audi S5 is powered by a 333-horsepower, supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine paired with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Significant standard features include Quattro all-wheel drive, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, LED running lights and taillights, a power soft-top with acoustic fabric (convertible), rollover protection (convertible), tri-zone climate control and leather seats. As required in all new vehicles, the S5 is also equipped with front airbags, antilock brakes and an electronic stability system.

Significant available features include adaptive cruise control, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, the Audi Connect information system, adaptive suspension and a blind spot warning system.

Should I Buy the 2016 Audi S5?

Its impressive performance due to the supercharged V-6 and responsive dual-clutch transmission make this model a contender in its class, and the Black Optic Package sets its appearance apart from competitors. The S5 does have a few drawbacks, however, like overly assisted steering and the extra-firm base suspension.

Audi A5 Coupé i S5 Coupé (2016) — premiera

Trochę wyraźniej zarysowane przednie błotniki, element dekoracyjny nad nadkolem i lekka zmiana przetłoczenia karoserii tuż nad progami. To wszystko.

Inżynierowie odchudzili A5 Coupé o 60 kg, a współczynnik oporu powietrza wynosi 0,25.

Nowo zagospodarowane wnętrze to oczywiście kształt i ergonomia znane z modelu A4. Teraz ma on pojemność 465 litrów.

W podwoziu zaszły dokładnie takie same zmiany jak w A4.

Edmunds’ Expert Review

Can you really get sophisticated styling and impressive performance all in one package? You can with the 2016 Audi S5. Whether you like the clean lines of the hardtop coupe or the open-top fun of the S5 convertible, this Audi delivers refinement and speed without compromise. It’s one of our favorite luxury two-doors, and we think you’ll like it, too. Read on to see why.

Vehicle overview

If you’re considering a sport-luxury coupe or convertible, you’re probably looking for invigorating performance, sexy styling and a refined, intimate cabin. The 2016 Audi S5 delivers in all of those areas. Based on the regular four-cylinder A5, the S5 turns up the heat with a supercharged V6 that provides blistering acceleration. It also boasts a tauter suspension, bigger brakes and subtle aesthetic upgrades inside and out that convey the car’s sporting intent.

The 2016 Audi S5’s eye-catching yet restrained styling is the perfect complement to its refined performance.

But the S5 isn’t the kind of performance car that feels amped up all the time. With its supple ride, effective noise insulation and supportive seats, this Audi also excels on long road trips and in everyday driving. All-wheel drive is standard, of course, so if you live in a snowbelt state, there’s no need to garage your S5 for the winter. And if you’re wondering about fuel economy, the S5 returns up to 21 mpg in combined city/highway driving, which is impressive for a car with this kind of zip.

Drawbacks are few but notable. For one thing, the cramped backseat is better for personal items than people, though that’s not too unusual for this type of vehicle. For another, the current S5 has been around for a while, and its technology offerings are showing their age. The base Premium Plus trim doesn’t come standard with Bluetooth audio, for example, and it also gets a basic version of the MMI infotainment system with awkward dash-mounted controls. You’ll need to add the expensive Technology package or spring for the Prestige trim in order to rectify these flaws, and either way, you’re still stuck with Audi’s proprietary digital music interface instead of the USB connectivity that most rivals include.

If the S5 isn’t your thing, you could go with the BMW 435i coupe or hardtop convertible, for example, and enjoy fresher cabin technology and a roomier backseat, albeit with less straight-line speed. The luxurious 2016 Mercedes-Benz E400 coupe and convertible serve up an enthusiastic 329 hp and arguably more valet line prestige than the S5. Or you could save a bundle and savor the sweet sounds of the 2016 Ford Mustang GT’s 435-hp V8. Nonetheless, the Edmunds «A» rated 2016 Audi S5 remains a top performer with a debonair character that will always be in style.

2016 Audi S5 models

The 2016 Audi S5 is offered in coupe and convertible (cabriolet) body styles. The latter features a power-operated soft top and a wind blocker. Both are available in Premium Plus and Prestige trim levels.

Available as a coupe or convertible, the Audi S5 is just as easy to live with everyday as it is thrilling to pilot around turns.

Standard Premium Plus features include 18-inch wheels with summer tires, xenon headlights, LED running lights and taillights, an S5-specific body kit, auto-dimming mirrors with exterior heating, keyless entry and ignition, selectable driving settings (known as Audi Drive Select), shift paddles for the automatic transmission, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated eight-way power front sport seats (with four-way power lumbar), driver memory functions, a color driver information center, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a dash-mounted MMI electronics controller, a 6.5-inch display, a CD player, Audi’s proprietary digital music interface (with an iPod cable), a SD card slot and satellite radio.

In addition, the coupe gets a tilt-only sunroof, leather and simulated suede upholstery and 60/40-split folding rear seatbacks, while the convertible gets premium leather upholstery and 50/50-split folding rear seatbacks.

The Prestige trim adds adaptive headlights and the Technology package, which includes Bluetooth streaming audio, Audi Connect with online services and mobile WiFi, a navigation system, voice controls, an upgraded MMI system with a larger display and console-mounted controls, a CD player, HD radio, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and a blind-spot monitor. The Technology package can also be added to the Premium Plus trim as an option.

Going with the Prestige also lets you opt for the Driver Assistance package, which adds adaptive steering and adaptive cruise control with a forward collision mitigation system. Prestige coupes are additionally eligible for a Luxury package, which adds comfort front seats with less aggressive bolstering and upgraded leather upholstery with extended coverage.

All coupes can be equipped with a Black Optic package that includes special 19-inch wheels, high-gloss black exterior trim, body-color exterior mirrors and the upgraded leather upholstery that’s in the convertible. New for 2016 is a coupe-only Black Optic Plus package that adds 20-inch wheels and gloss-black exterior mirrors.

All convertibles, meanwhile, are eligible for a Comfort package that features ventilated comfort front seats with perforated leather upholstery and a neck-level heating system.

Stand-alone options across the lineup include 19-inch wheels, a torque-vectoring sport differential and adaptive suspension dampers.

ABT pushes the 2018 Audi S5 from 349 HP to 419 HP

The S5 combines form and function like no other car from the Audi company and ABT is offering just the right amount of upgrades to increase performance and sharpen the look of the elegant midsize all-wheel-drive. Leaving the S5 Sportback, Coupe and Cabriolet in the hands of ABT, the 3.0-liter V6 engine gets a boost of up to 419 HP and 405 lb-ft (stock performance: 349 HP / 369 lb-ft). Power is applied in a save and reliable way through the separate ABT Engine Control (AEC) unit, that is only increasing driving pleasure but not the service life the engine.

Sportback, Coupe and Convertible receive aerodynamic upgrades featuring the distinctive ABT design language. A dynamic looking front spoiler and sporty rear skirt set with a 4-pipe rear muffler are perfectly in line with the elegant styling of the car, giving it a more individual character.

Elegant or dynamic, modern or classic in design – ABT wheels are always professionally balanced in weight and handling. S5 owners can either go for a 19” DR or ER-C wheel or pick a 20” DR, ER-C, FR or GR wheel. All designs are available in different finishes.

And it is not only the ABT power, aerodynamics and wheels that make the Audi S5 more attractive. ABT height adjustable suspension springs lower the Sportback, Coupe or Cabriolet by 0.6 to 1.5 inches and make cornering a lot more fun. The adjustability allows the right setup to be implemented for any application.

TRANSFORM your S5 inTO AN ABT

ABT Audi S5 Coupe

The second generation of the Audi A5 sport version has just recently appeared on the scene. ABT Sportsline, the world’s largest refiner of vehicles for the Volkswagen group, would of course not miss the opportunity of engine tuning for the S5s three model variants. A considerable 419 HP and 405 lb-ft torque is available after a performance increase by the ABT experts.

The S5 coupé, the cabriolet, as well as the five-door fastback are able to take advantage of a 20% ABT POWER performance increase of the 3.0 liter V6 turbo engine. Despite the extra power, the Quattro’s engines are not overloaded. ABT Sportsline therefore also offers the best warranty service: «We are confident in our work. The customer not only notices this but also benefits from it,» confirms Hans-Jürgen Abt, Managing Director of the vehicle refiner. As the performance is to be heard and felt, but not necessarily to be seen, the sporting cars from Ingolstadt receive discreet ABT emblems on the rear and the front grille. The ABT sports rims are another Power-Plus indication. Various 19 and 20 inch wheel rims are available in different colors. The highlight is of course the new 20 inch ABT Sport GR wheel rim available in «matt black» or «glossy black». Those who wish to accentuate the sporty look, can turn to the rear skirt set consisting of the ABT rear skirt add on and a special muffler system.

ABT Audi S5 Sportback

Anyone who contemplates buying an S4, but would like other options than the Saloon or Avant, will do well with the Audi S5. The now second generation of the German car once again offers an attractive troika of a breezy Cabriolet, a sleek Coupé and a convenient Sportback. The latter in particular is definitely suitable as a primary car with its clever space concept. Where fastback vehicles in the mid-size range used to be primarily practical, but not necessarily pretty, the S5 Sportback is a whole different story. It is a fantastic fastback which looks brilliant in a sporty outfit. We consequently have an expressive aerodynamic package in our range for this version of the S5 as well. It consists of a front spoiler with an offset air splitter and the rear skirt set including a 4-pipe rear muffler in a black chrome design.

But the S5 Sportback does not gain strength in appearance only. Like for the Coupé and the Cabriolet, we offer our additional ABT Engine Control (AEC) unit which increases the production power of the 3.0-liter V6 turbo engine by approx. 20 percent. That takes the car from 349 HP to an impressive 419 HP. At the same time, the maximum torque is increased from 369 to 405 lb-ft. Very convenient then that the S5 Sportback becomes even better at cornering with our different suspension options. And of course, various 19 and 20 inch rims in attractive colors are also available.

ABT Audi S5 Convertible

Cruise ships are popular. After all, you can relax in the sun on deck while the nicest travel destinations in the world just seem to float by – even though in reality it’s actually the other way round. Anyone who prefers a more active role, should drive a fast convertible, such as the new Audi S5. Four fast “deck chairs” invite you to cruise. The engine room has 349 HP and the maximum torque is 369 lb-ft. Hans-Jürgen Abt, captain of the tuning company bearing his name in Bavaria, can provide even more thrust if required.

Thanks to ABT Power with a specially developed control unit, the currently fastest model of the A5 convertible has received a 20 % power boost to reach 419 HP and a maximum torque of 405 lb-ft. “Overall, the performance is now very close to the Audi RS5, which is currently only available as a Coupe and Sportback” says Hans-Jürgen Abt.

While boat owners might use tires as a common replacement for fenders to protect their vessel from being damaged in the harbor, the high performance tires on the Audi S5 become real works of art thanks to ABT. And the customers have a selection of four different alloy wheels. The DR and ER-C designs are available as 19 or 20 inch rims and the FR and GR designs are available in 20 inch. Depending on the model selected, a variety of finishes is available: from mystic black to silverbullet all the way up to matt black and glossy black. Several designs also have a diamond-machined finish on some surfaces. All the stated models can also be purchased at ABT Sportsline as complete wheel sets, either with Dunlop or Continental tires.

To give the captain’s cabin an exclusive look, ABT Sportsline also offers integrated entrance lights, which project the ABT logo onto the ground via LEDs. Special floor mats and valve caps complete the picture and show that nothing has been left to chance. Those with an even more exclusive taste can contact the ABT Individual crew who are able to fulfill almost any special request.

The ABT specialists are also currently working on the aerodynamics. In just a few weeks the Audi S5 will look even sleeker. Those interested can now register for this attractive package on the company’s website. As soon as the aerodynamics package is available, it can be retrofitted quickly at ABT Sportsline or at one of the countless ABT agencies in more than 60 countries worldwide. The only thing that ABT doesn’t have in its range is a matching figurehead.

Audi History

Audi AG (Audi) is a German automobile brand founded in 1909 by August Horst.

Audi, Horch (an earlier automobile brand founded by August Horst in 1899), Wanderer and DKW merged into Auto Union AG in 1932. The four ring Audi emblem represents these four companies.

At the end of World War II the Auto Union factories were taken over by the Soviet Union who occupied the eastern part of Germany. Auto Union GmbH was restarted in Bavaria, in the western part of Germany, in 1949 and produced cars, delivery vans and motorcycles under the DKW brand, all with two-stroke engines. DKW had pioneered front wheel drive cars with transverse mounted engines in the early 1930’s.

Daimler-Benz AG bought a large share of Auto Union in 1958 and the remaining shares in 1959.

Volkswagen purchased half of Auto Union in 1964 and the remaining part in 1966. The Audi brand name was resurrected with a new car model with a Mercedes developed four-stroke engine in 1965. The last DKW was produced in 1966.

NSU, a German company founded in 1873, producing cars between 1906 and 1929 and again from 1958 until 1977, merged with Audi in 1969. Many of the Audi models produced after Volkswagen took ownership of the brand were VW’s with Audi badges. In secrecy and in opposition to the parent company, Volkswagen, Audi developed the Audi 100. The model was launched in 1968, again resurrecting the identity of the Audi brand.

The Quattro four-wheel drive system, a development from systems used in the DKW Munga and the Volkswagen Iltis, both small four-wheel drive military vehicles, was introduced in the 1980 performance car Audi Quattro, a coupe with constant four-wheel drive. The Quattro four-wheel drive system was later implemented to the other models in the Audi range.

Volkswagen transformed Audi to the groups premium brand in the 1980’s and 90’s.

Very honest family business. Very warm and welcoming. Very reasonable with part exchange too. It makes a change to deal with honest car sales people. I am sure I will be a repeat customer. I would rate at 5 star plus.

Was very polite and responsive

Great customer from Invictus Motors, I appreciated their honesty, the Porsche 911 was very well explained to me with all the pro’s and the con’s as I wasn’t sure of whether to buy an older Porsche 911 or a new Porsche Cayman with a PDK gearbox. I also appreciated the time they gave me to inspect the vehicle and also facilitating independent inspection by RSR Porscha as they had originally serviced the car. I would definitely recommend them.

Let’s start with the obvious elephant in the room: The new 2017 Audi S5 looks mostly like the model it replaces. Is that a bad thing? We headed to Portugal to test out the S5 on that country’s serpentine back roads, and to see if there’s something more substantive behind its evolved exterior.

Only compared to the decidedly more evocative Mercedes-AMG C43 Coupe does the svelte S5 come across as a little frumpy. It takes parking the new S5 next to the old one to spot the details. A tweaked profile. A more pronounced belt line. A power-dome hood. Narrower A-pillars. The new S5 is different, but the same, in that grand Audi tradition.

Underhood, the differences are again evolutionary. The original S5 featured a 4.2-liter, naturally aspirated V8. A few years back, that was replaced by a supercharged 3.0-liter V6, which in turn has been supplanted in the 2017 S5 by a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The turbo, a twin-scroll unit nestled between the cylinder banks, helps the direct-injection engine make a healthy 354 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. That power, 21 hp and 44 lb-ft more than its predecessor, is channelled through Quattro all-wheel drive.

The newly developed V6 mates exclusively to a conventional eight-speed automatic, which seems like a step backward. Last year’s S5 offered either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. We pressed Audi and got the answer we expected: Demand for the stick was nonexistent outside the United States (go America!) and the dual-clutch couldn’t handle the 44 pound-foot increase in torque.

Curiously, the A5 on which the S5 is based trades last year’s eight-speed autobox for a seven-speed dual-clutch. It sounds like someone at Audi put the wrong transmission in each car, but in reality the S5’s torquey engine is well-suited to the refined eight-speed. Kick the throttle, get into boost, and all four drive wheels scrabble for traction, especially on the wet pavement we encountered outside of Porto, Portugal. Punch the S5 to pass on a tight two-lane road and the sport exhaust roars with the kind of guttural growl we want to hear in a sporty coupe. It positively scoots.

Though its Volkswagen MLB 2 platform is new, the S5 rides and handles like a more refined version of its predecessor. Considerably less road rumble penetrates the cabin, and the S5 strikes a pleasant balance between grand-touring plush and sports-car firm. That’s probably because our test car was equipped with the optional three-mode adaptive suspension system; base cars ride on standard non-adjustable units.

Comfort mode softened things up for rutted terrain, while Dynamic mode was noticeably stiffer. We preferred the «Auto» setting, which straddles a pleasant middle ground. In any mode, body lean is kept in check, but pushing the S5 hard reminded us that more weight sits over the front wheels here than in a BMW 435i. You’ll get some push if you really shove the coupe into a corner, but the Hankook tires developed specifically for the S5 have respectable grip. In US trim, the car’s curb weight should come in about 100 pounds lower than last year’s model, which weighed 3,858 pounds; the quoted 3,560-pound figure is for a European-spec car.

The S5’s cabin, like the C-Class’s, feels an entire class above BMW’s two-door. Material choices are excellent throughout and, for such a complex car, the switchgear is logically arrayed. Few buttons are on the dashboard itself, and a big, 12.3-inch Virtual Dashboard takes the place of conventional gauges and works brilliantly. The highly configurable screen never washes out in harsh light and can be set to display virtual gauges with the tachometer front and center or a host of trip computer and navigation functions. A secondary screen propped on the center of the dash for Audi’s MMI Plus infotainment looks like an iPad but is controlled by a big center-console knob with a touchpad on its surface. More efficient software makes MMI Plus breezier to navigate than before.

The cosseting doesn’t end there, although we should note that adding all these luxuries will bump the price well above the estimated $55,000 base price. S5s will drive themselves for limited periods on the highway with an optional package, something we weren’t able to test out since the drive was exclusively on narrow back roads that felt more like a rally stage at times than a rural highway.

That’s the kind of terrain where the S5 should be driven: roads that bring to mind the hunting grounds of its sporty, Quattro-equipped predecessors. These roads were selected to flatter the S5, and they did, to the new coupe’s credit. The Audi S5 carries on much of what we loved about its predecessor, staying the course conceptually but updated with a new platform, a bucks-up interior, and enough technology to intrigue even the most hardened technophile.
