Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don’t be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn’t promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don’t cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.

Used 2013 Hyundai Sonata Consumer Reviews

Sonata keeps getting better

This is my third Sonata, a 2007, 2010, now a 2013. Each is better than the last. I have the Limited with the 2.0 Turbo. It is as fast as the old muscle cars, but smoother and more conomical. Interior is nicer than in the past, dash layout is good and the instrument panel lighting is very sharp. Seats are comfortable and both front and back are heated. Compared to my V-6 Sonata, I’m getting 3 to 4 mpg better milage and with better performance. As for reliability, none of my Sonatas ever needed warranty service. The style is better than cars costing twice as much. Every time I park next to a luxury car, I still prefer the Sonata styling and the high quality of the pain

Bought my «Sparkling Ruby» Sonata on 5/26/12 and just don’t want to park it! It’s so fun to drive and very smooth. Great deal for so many options. Would definitely recommend.

One terrific car

This is one great car. Hyundai has gotten everything right. I have owned 28 cars in my life including Mercedes (awful), Audi, Lincoln, Avalon, etc., and this Sonata does not disappoint. This my second Sonata. the first being a 2011. The most noticeable improvement is the increased level of quietness. The 2011 had an unacceptable level of tire noise intruding into the cabin on coarse roads. The 2013 is almost silent on most city streets and measurably quieter at speed. Wind noise is non existent. UPDATE: The car is now 3.5 years old (I will very likely get a 2017 in December). The passenger seat on this one as well as my 2011 sits far too low. I give an extra seat cushion to female friends so that can see out! Car does not have electric seats, and no manual raise/lower. The Bluetooth has been the only weak spot. It often cannot understand my dialing instructions. Incoming calls are fine (and no, I am not driving when I speak on the phone!) It will play music from my iPhone if it feels like it. Hyundai dealer has replaced the radio system twice with no improvement. They say the fault has been with the manufacturer of the system. I continue to love this car and «they and thought of everything» plays through my head every time I drive it.

P1326 error code on 2013 Hyundai Sonata. Vehicle is in limp…

P1326 error code on 2013 Hyundai Sonata. Vehicle is in limp mode. Motor was already replaced on the vehicle by the dealer. Came to my shop for bodywork, never showed on the prescan. When the vehicle was ready for delivery (after detailing) code can up.

Mechanic’s Assistant: How many miles are on the Hyundai? Do you have scan tool or a code reader?

Yes I have a launch scan tool

Mechanic’s Assistant: Are you fixing your Sonata yourself? What have you tried so far?

I’m trying to see if the problem was from the dealer not changing the knock sensor, or if I, (my shop) got it wet.

Mechanic’s Assistant: Anything else you want the mechanic to know before I connect you?

The engine light blinks, p1326 (glow relay stuck on). hesitates when it shifts from 1st to second.

Hello and thank you for your question. My name is ***** ***** I am happy to assist you today. Sorry to hear you are having problems today. Give me just a moment to review your post, and I’ll be right back with the help you need. The Web Site will prompt a phone call , I’ll let you know if it’s needed.

When the motor was replaced at the dealer did they install the knock sensor wiring harness extension?

Hyundai releases a service bulletin for the code P1326 that did in fact call for replacing the engine as well as adding a Knock sensor wiring extension and if that was not performed during the engine replaceent then this will need to be done. I have enclosed the service bulletin for your review in the link below. Check with the dealer to see if the extension was installed and if it was not then it needs to be done. Its not likely accident-related unless somehow it cause damage to the knock sensor connection. If that is not the caase then this needs to be returned to the dealer. See the bulletin in the link below for reference.

Okay then I would return it to the dealer to have the extension installed and that should solve this for them. Thank you very much as well.

2013 Hyundai Sonata

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata gets an updated navigation system and slight adjustments to the standard feature list, depending on the model. The biggest news may disappoint driving enthusiasts, however: Unlike last year, the 2013 Sonata is not offered with a manual transmission.

The 2013 Sonata comes in four models, including a hybrid that can be driven at highway speeds in full electric mode and an available turbocharged engine that is one of the most powerful in this class but still delivers excellent fuel mileage.

Sonata’s styling is busy for our taste and not as clean as its corporate sibling, the Kia Optima. Many other critics have praised Sonata’s look, however, and if it’s confused with any other sedan, it’s more likely to be mistaken for a Lexus or some other luxury model than for another mainstream mid-size.

Inside, features, materials and fit and finish are among the best in the class, especially in build quality and tolerances.

The 2013 Sonata lineup starts with the Sonata GLS, which retails for about $21,000 and comes with a full complement of power features, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and more power than other cars in its class. Another $825 adds heated front seats, automatic light control, fog lights and 16 inch alloy wheels. The mid-range Sonata SE satisfies sporty tastes with a firmer suspension and sharper steering, while the Limited comes nearly loaded, with full leather, dual-zone automatic climate control and audio upgrade, starting at about $26,000.

Sonata’s standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder delivers 198 horsepower (190 hp in states using California emissions regulations), or 200 hp with a dual exhaust system in the Sonata SE. It’s substantially more powerful than the base engine in competitors, but it runs neck and neck in the Environmental Protection Agency’s fuel economy ratings, matched to a smooth shifting, well programmed 6-speed automatic transmission.

Sonata’s upgrade engine led a trend in this class, eschewing a larger V6 for a smaller, efficient turbocharged four-cylinder. The 2.0T, as Hyundai calls it, satisfies America’s perceived need for speed with 274 horsepower and excellent acceleration on regular-grade gas. Yet it’s EPA-rated 33 mpg Highway.

The Sonata Hybrid features a full parallel hybrid system allowing the car to be driven on its 40-hp electric motor at speeds up to 62 miles per hour. While such an occurrence will be rare in the real world, the Hybrid’s blended gas-electric operation still improves fuel economy, with higher mileage ratings than similar hybrids from Honda and Toyota. Moreover, while the other hybrids in this class have a gearless, continuously variable transmission, the Sonata Hybrid gets the same 6-speed automatic as the other Sonata models. It drives and …

2013 Hyundai Sonata/Sonata Hybrid Summary:

After helping set a new trend for dramatic design in the mid-size sedan segment, the 2013 Hyundai Sonata receives some minor adjustments as it enters its third year on the market. Heated seats, for example, have been added as standard equipment on all models except the entry-level GLS configuration, and the premium Sonata Limited gains an available panoramic sunroof as an upgrade to its standard traditional sunroof. Engineers also have enhanced the powertrain of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid to deliver increased efficiency and performance.

Model Lineup:

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata comes in three basic trim levels, opening with the Sonata GLS that includes standard air conditioning, a six-speed automatic transmission, and Bluetooth technology. Moving up to the Sonata SE brings features like a proximity entry/pushbutton start, heated front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, paddle shifters and sport-tuned steering and suspension systems. At the top of the lineup, the Limited welcomes leather seating surfaces, heated rear seats, second-row heating vents, and a 360-watt Dimension audio system. In addition, the SE and Limited Sonatas can be kitted out with Hyundai’s 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine instead of the standard and naturally aspirated 2.4-liter 4-cylinder unit.

Engines and Transmissions:

The standard powertrain for the 2013 Hyundai Sonata combines the company’s proprietary six-speed automatic transmission and an advanced 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with technologies like gasoline direct injection and dual continuously variable valve timing. In the GLS and Limited, the powerplant makes 198 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque, while the sportier SE benefits from 200 of the former and 186 of the latter. But there’s also even better news for enthusiasts, in the form of the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that can transform 2.0 liters of displacement into 274 hp and 269 lb.-ft. of torque in the SE and Limited versions of the Sonata. The 2013 Sonata Hybrid pairs a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine to new electrical components, including a higher-output 35-kW electric motor and more powerful 47 kW lithium-polymer battery pack.

Fuel Economy Ratings

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata posts an EPA line of 24 mpg city/35 mpg highway/28 mpg combined with its standard powertrain, and its fuel-economy performance only slips slightly with the turbo model; even with its additional power, the car can achieve 22 mpg city/34 mpg highway/26 mpg combined. As for the 2013 Sonata Hybrid, it can now reach 36 mpg city/40 mpg highway/38 mpg combined, representing increases of 2 mpg/1 mpg/2 mpg over the 2012 model.

Safety Ratings:

The 2013 Hyundai Sonata retains its Top Safety Pick status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), although it received a “marginal” grade in the new small-overlap test that the institute is just now adding to its evaluation program. In the New Car Assessment Program run by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Sonata scored five stars across the board to earn an overall five-star score from the government.

Technology Highlights:

Among the top tech features in the 2013 Hyundai Sonata are its Blue Link telematics system with automatic collision notification, vehicle diagnostics, stolen-vehicle tracking, and more. Also in the mix: Bluetooth for audio streaming and hands-free calling, a 400-watt Infinity sound system, the industry’s first factory-installed HD Radio capability, a rearview camera system, and a full navigation setup with a seven-inch touchscreen, voice-control functionality and Real-time XM NavTraffic, XM NAV Weather, XM Sports Ticker and XM Stock Ticker.

Engine Failure problems of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata

18 problems related to engine failure have been reported for the 2013 Hyundai Sonata. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2013 Hyundai Sonata based on all problems reported for the 2013 Sonata.

Engine Failure problem 1

0 warning codes and suffered catastrophic engine failure.

Engine Failure problem 2

In the evening of 07/11/2019 I was driving my 2013 Hyundai santa on the bishop Ford expressway, when smoke began to come out of the hood. I pulled over to the shoulder, and at that time , my car was completely filled with black smoke, and the brakes completely failed, foot went right to the floor. The car coasted until it finally stopped. By this time, the car was in fire. I was able to exit before it completely engulfed in flames. There was no warning to me that this car was going to start on fire. I had the engine replaced 2 years ago because of engine failure. Two engines in 6 years is definitely not normal. I could have been killed in that car. . Hyundai needs to take responsibility.

Engine Failure problem 3

The recall for Hyundai, campaign953 was to install engine software update for all Sonata vehicles from 2011-2018 with a 2. 4l gdi. I had the engine recall software update done on 3/26/19. This was intended as a warning system in the event of engine failure. On 4/15/19, while driving on the freeway in los angeles, my engine seized up, and put my life at risk. The software update did not work, and there was no warning at all. If I had not been in the right lane, and able to steer over into a very narrow shoulder of the freeway, I could have been seriously injured or worse. The car was towed to my mechanic’s lot near me, since it was a Sunday evening, and Hyundai was not open. The next day, my mechanic did start the car, and said it should be fine to drive it the short distance to the Hyundai dealer, less than 2 miles away, since it was a warranty situation. I got one block, and the engine seized up again. I had it towed the 2 miles to the dealer. They discovered the engine had to be replaced, which took almost 4 weeks. No explanation of the software update failure. Since getting the car back on may 7,2019- I have had total anxiety, and fear the same issue could happen. I had a severe panic attack on the freeway on may 10, that was terrifying, and a friend had to stay on the phone with me until I got to work. I have contacted the Hyundai corp. Legal dept. Through an attorney, and there has been no satisfaction in compensation or consideration for the fact that due to their faulty engine, and recall software failure, they put my life at risk! the customer care dept. Is the worst I have ever experienced with any company, and I am now at extreme financial loss. The re-sale value has plummeted, and I now have financial stress being forced to get another car I feel safe in. I have lost total confidence in Hyundai. This was a terrible nightmare that is not being resolved! help!.

Engine Failure problem 4

The engine completely stalled while I was driving down the interstate at 68 miles per hour. The engine failure happened suddenly without warning as I was trying to accelerate down the interstate. At the moment the engine failure occurred there was various dashboard lights on my car that illuminated — including the engine oil pressure warning light and the malfunction indicator lamp. I maneuvered the car to the off-ramp and then parked on the right shoulder. The engine was visibly vibrating and shaking at this point before I turned off the ignition. Any attempts to start my car again were unsuccessful and a tow to the Hyundai dealership was needed.

My 2013 Hyundai Sonata had complete and total engine failure. I take care of the car and maintain it and the engine just failed in the middle of a residential road at a stop sign. Turns out it was one of many that Hyundai offered an extended warranty on but I was never notified my engine or car for that matter was one on a national recall and backorder.

Engine Failure problem 10

Upon driving on the fwy, my vehicle suddenly lost power as I was traveling. Although at that point no warning lamps had come on the dash. I put on hazard lights to get the attention of other drivers, but it seemed as though they didn’t see them. As I started to get out of the fast lane into the right lanes, the vehicle was just coasting, thankfully I was near an exit, so I coasted off the fwy, at this point the car was going uphill off the exit and all the warning lights appeared at that point and the vehicle just stopped on the exit of the fwy. I contacted aaa because my car was in a very dangerous, exit stranded and I couldn’t get out my vehicle. Once aaa tech arrived, he lifted my vehicle to tow it and he said to me there’s oil pouring out of your vehicle, that’s real bad. He suggested I go to a nearby shop he knew of and the owner had me watch him as he looked at my car. He thought perhaps the oil pan wasn’t secured. But, once he lifted up the car and the rest of the oil was running out, he saw pieces of metal in the oil, he said «that’s parts of your engine, right there, your engine is gone. I said what is that, he said , unfortunately you had engine failure!.
