Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don’t be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn’t promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don’t cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.

Have You Driven the 2005 Hyundai Elantra?

What Drivers Are Saying

by eclectic108 from Rochester, NY on Mon Apr 13 2009

Bought this GT hatchback new in 2005, I’ve driven this car just over 80,000 miles. The car is still tight with no rattles, squeeks or leaks. Other than a bad 2nd gear synchronizer and a faulty power mirror switch (both covered under warranty) this car has been virtually trouble free. Despite the repeated salt baths cars receive here in upstate NY, the body remains rust free. Gas mileage continues to average 30.8 MPG in mixed city/hwy driving. Leather seating surfaces and interior remain like new. Seats still provide excellent support even after several hours of driving. Many cars that I’ve previously owned have shown shown many more problems by this point in their lives, including A/C, PS & oil leaks. No such problems with this car. Remains an excellent value.

My wife bought a new Elantra in Spring ’05. She was so happy with it (and I was so impressed after driving it) that I bought one that fall. It is now Feb ’10 — we are still driving the same cars, and we still love them. We get regular maintenance, and neither of us have had any mechanical problems whatsoever. I travel a lot for work so I drive rental cars quite often. I always get compact cars (comparable to the Elantra), and even the NEW models of the Cobalt, Sentra, etc. don’t compare with the driving experience of my ’05 Elantra.

this was my first car and I really enjoyed it. The only thing is that it is too small for me personally, but it is a great car. GREAT MPG! Interior doesn’t take long to wear away though.

This is my first car although I learned to drive in a mini van but I am in love with my Elantra. I was very skeptical at first when I bought the car one year ago because it had 102000 miles already on it, but this car still impresses me every time I drive it. I saved up for years for a car and this one was definitely worth every penny. The pedals are very responsive (more so than my parents’ new cars) and the steering is smooth and easy. I’m usually driving alone and passengers never complain so there is plenty of room. I’ve put another 4000 miles on it and living in a suburban area I’m getting about 20 mpg still which I can’t complain about. I had considered selling the car this year when I go away to school, but I know I would regret it an I can’t part with it. I do agree with another review that the cup holders are a little close but I have fit two full large Popeyes drinks in there without spills so it’s alright.

bought brand new October 2005 w/37 miles, NOW 180k: spent 6 years as wife’s daily driver + 2 as ‘utility car’ (vacuous hatchback) + 2 with neglectful daughter, which prompted wife to TAKE IT BACK for the last 2, returning as her work commuter instead of our new grandkid-hauling minivan (she LOVES this car!). Bottom line: a very basic ‘plain jane’ that STILL drives well (local daily, Florida twice, Hilton Head thrice, Texas 5 times!!) and besides brakes/oil/tires/etc. the ONLY mechanical parts that have been replaced are a loud ‘flex’ exhaust pipe and the O2 sensor (this was easier to replace than a spark plug!! open the hood, and it’s staring up at you!!). Amazingly resilient!!

I’ve owned it for 8 years, such amazing car comes once a decade. It rarely faced a mechanical troubles and usually it’s my neglect fault . body is almost rust free, its performance is pretty good with comfortable seats. I wish Hyundai makes again a new car as the same as Elantra 2005 specs . Thanks my lovely car

I bought this car as my car to drive me from Tucson to Phoenix, back, and around town. It gets good gas mileage as I no longer drive from Phoenix to Tucson on a regular basis, I only visit the pump once every 2-3 weeks or so. Car has enough pep when you put down the pedal. Is comforatable to drive in for an extended amount of time. A/C and heater do their jobs pretty efficiently. Down sides. 5th gear could be loosened up a little. When I cruise at 80 (75mph limits) on the highway inbetween cities then RPM’s get a little too close to 3k for me, it’d be nice to lose a little performance and gain a somewhat quiter engine at the high cruising speeds. CD became available in the audio market in 1982. 24 years later and we’re still putting tape decks in cars? Sorry, they should be putting in a CD player.

Pleasantly Surprised — Coming from big Lexus and Mercedes tere was an adjustment to a smaller car with less power. One the other hand we don’t miss the gas bills or maintenance, particularly on the Mercedes. Except for routine maintenance this car hasn’t had to spend any time in the shop.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: This car surprised us. It was our first Hyundai and it has been exceptional. We have since bought another one. We were used to Lexus & Mercedes & this car wowed us.

Cons: It is a smaller car than we have been used to. It has a lot of cargo space for its size. We are used to a lot more power in our past cars but the gas mileage makes up for it.

Zippy! — I have been pleasantly surprised at the handling and performance of my mom-mobile. Weather we are loaded up for a long trip or zipping around town we get there quickly. I have driven lots of vehicles: sports/performance cars, wagons & minivans, a dual-axle pick-up, & econo cars. They all have their pros & cons but this is a happy medium!

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: She’s a great little car. We expect a lot out of her & she delivers. Good comfort for myself and 3 kids. Great fuel economy.

Cons: Back seat not good for 2 car seats +1 child. Definitely not for tall/big people or anyone with knee conditions- getting in and out could be difficult.

Its It — Amaizaing car with the smooth performance and the acceleration of the engien. i am taking care of it since i baught it and she is retering back the faivour more and more. thats why iam taking care of her appearance

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Speed

Cons: Sun roof

Worth Every Penny. — Nice vehicle, good warrenty, would not hold up to a major crash. Excellent engine/transmission for a manual. Excellent gas mileage, cheap payments, actually paid this one off pretty fast. Fun to drive, heck yes. Handled very well. Len was a speed demon in this one.

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Pros: Very economical

Cons: tin canish

Great Job — I like the simplicity of design and the easy driving. The performance beats most all in its class, and is easily maintained and customizable. This car is well worth the money, especially those on a budget. Well done Hyundai. Word.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Most everything

Cons: Heat does not blow warm at rest.

Get This Car. — like: good gas mileage and very reliable! Haven’t had a more reliable car ever! dislike: not good at racing and it’s a cheap mode of transportation. This car will never break down. so I expect to keep it for a very long time!

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: practical and useful!

Cons: not flashy.

05 Elantra Gls 5-door — Build Quality is fine. Performance is lacking but it is a small car and a small engine. I love that it looks like a Saab 9-3. It is pretty good on gas, although I wish it was bigger now with two kids.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Cheap to buy

Cons: Maintenance intervals can be expensive

Fun — It doesn’t look fast, but it’s 2.0L DOHC engine with 140 horses geared high on the 5-speed manual, and a car weigh-in of 2700 pounds, it’s got potential, very fun. Great stock sound system. Plenty of room for three more friends. Great cargo. Great lighting. Will have many years of fun with this car.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: +++

Cons: — — —

Highly Recommended For The Avg. College Kid Not Looking For A Sports Car — This is a great little car for anyone who just wants to go places.. It has nice pick-up, smooth handling, and has pretty good gas mileage. AVG MPG is around 26 in the city and close to 34 on the highways. I own the manual, which is a lot of fun. The clutch is really smooth and the control is excellent. The only major downside is that there is a great loss of horsepower once the A/C is turned on.. makes the acceleration slow down a lot from a stand-still.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Quick pick-up w/out A/C on, smooth handeling, great gas milage

Cons: Loss of pick-up when A/C is on

2005 Hyundai Elantra Review

Solidly built, powerful engine for its class, long list of standard features, comfortable interior, ultralow price tag, generous warranty. Floaty ride on the freeway with base suspension, hard to find equipped with ABS, poor offset crash test score.

Should I lease or buy a 2005 Hyundai Elantra?

Is it better to lease or buy a car? Ask most people and they’ll probably tell you that car buying is the way to go. And from a financial perspective, it’s true, provided you’re willing to make higher monthly payments, pay off the loan in full and keep the car for a few years. Leasing, on the other hand, can be a less expensive option on a month-to-month basis. It’s also good if you’re someone who likes to drive a new car every three years or so.

How to Replace the Fuel Filter in a 2005 Hyundai Elantra

The fuel filter replacement process on the 2005 Hyundai Elantra requires a method that differs from the method used on most vehicles. First, the similarities, though. As with all cars, the fuel filter on the 2005 Hyundai Elantra cleans the fuel before it gets to the engine. The filter inside of the fuel filter housing traps the sediments inside of the filter. The clean fuel then leaves the fuel filter and goes into the engine. The fuel filter in the 2005 Hyundai Elantra is recommended to be replaced every 50,000 miles.

Open the rear doors on the 2005 Hyundai Elantra and locate the two main connector bolts that hold each rear seat in place. The two bolts are located under the front part of each rear seat. Remove the four bolts with a 3/8 inch ratchet and a 12mm socket. Turn the bolts counter-clockwise to loosen and remove the bolts. Slide the rear seats out of the seat compartment. Then slide the rear seats out of the car.

Locate the clip in the center of the floor under where the seat was sitting. This clip holds the fuel tank access lid panel in place. Pry this clip up with a flat head screwdriver. Pull the carpet away from the panel. Pull the fuel tank access lid panel off of the top of the fuel tank. Slide one end of the rubber part of the access lid up and then keep working your way around the rubber part of the access lid until you are able to pull the access lid off. Be careful because there is a wire connector underneath the access lid that is connected to the top of the gas tank.

Unhook the wiring harness that is underneath the access lid from the connector on top of the gas tank. Set the access lid to the side.

Unscrew the gas cap from the gas tank to relieve the pressure from the fuel lines and the fuel filter. This is called «depressurising» the fuel system. This can also be done by removing the battery cable, but it is faster and easier to relieve the pressure by unscrewing the gas cap from the gas tank and you get the same results.

Remove the big fuel line from the top of the gas tank with pliers. Squeeze the tabs on the metal clamp inward and slide the metal clamp down the fuel line. Then slide the fuel line off of the plastic fuel line port. Lay the fuel line on a rag to catch any excess gas.

Remove the small fuel line on top of the gas tank with the pliers also. Squeeze the tabs inward on the metal clamp and slide the clamp down the fuel line. Then slide the fuel line off of the plastic fuel line port. Also, lay the fuel line on a rag to catch any excess gas.

Remove the eight bolts that are holding the top round portion of the fuel assembly lid. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, turn these small bolts counter-clockwise to loosen and remove the bolts from the lid. Once the small bolts are out of the lid, slide the lid off of the fuel assembly along with the lid gasket and set them both to the side with the bolts so they do not get lost.

Lay clean rags all around the base of the fuel assembly. Pull straight up on the center of the fuel assembly. Once you get the fuel assembly 3 to 4 inches up, you will have to angle the fuel assembly to get it out of the hole. This is where the rags come in handy because gas will spill off of the fuel assembly when you angle it out. Finish angling the fuel assembly out of the top of the gas tank and lay it on the rags.

Unhook the three clips that hold the top part of the fuel assembly to the bottom part. Then pull the top part of the fuel assembly away from the bottom part. Then unhook the main harness that holds the top and bottom parts together.

Pry off the metal bracket that holds the filter unit in place with a flat head screwdriver. The metal bracket has a fuel line coming out of the end of it. Remove the fuel filter unit with the fuel line still attached to the metal bracket by pulling the unit straight out of the fuel assembly. Lay the filter unit and the fuel line to the side of the top part of the fuel assembly.

Pull back on the two clips that are connecting the fuel filter to the top of the fuel assembly. Pull out on the fuel filter as you are pulling back on the two clips and the fuel filter will come out of the hole. Remove the two plastic washers, the two rubber o-rings and the cap from the old fuel filter because the new fuel filter does not come equipped with these must have items. Remember how these items come off of the old filter so you can properly transfer them to the new fuel filter.

Transfer the two plastic washers, the two rubber o-rings and the plastic cap onto the new fuel filter assembly. Push the new filter into place inside of the fuel assembly. Push the metal bracket back in place over the top of the fuel filter.

Hook the wiring harness inside of the fuel assembly back up and reattach the top and bottom portions together. The two pieces will snap together. Make sure that the fuel tube aligns up with the plastic cap before snapping the two pieces together.

Slide the assembly back into the gas tank. Put the lid ring back around the top of the fuel assembly. Screw the eight bolts back in place and tighten them down with the phillips head screwdriver. Then slide the two two fuel lines back onto the two fuel line ports on top of the fuel assembly. Squeeze the clamps down and slide them back over the fuel line and the port. Release the clamp so that it can properly tighten the fuel line to the fuel port.

Reconnect the main harness on the bottom of the fuel assembly access lid to the top of the fuel assembly unit on top of the gas tank. Then slide the rubber seal of the access lid back in place so that the access panel is completely sealed around the access hole. Lay the carpet back in place over the fuel assembly access lid.

Slide the seats back in and reinsert the bolts and tighten them back down. Screw the gas cap back on the gas tank. Turn the ignition key on and off three different times to prime and fill the fuel assembly back up with gas. Then crank the engine. Job complete.
