Warranty FAQs

What is a Bumper-to-Bumper warranty?

Often called a basic warranty or new-vehicle warranty, a bumper-to-bumper policy covers components like air conditioning, audio systems, vehicle sensors, fuel systems and major electrical components. Most policies exclude regular maintenance like fluid top offs and oil changes, but a few brands have separate free-maintenance provisions, and those that do offer them is slowly rising. Bumper-to-bumper warranties typically expire faster than powertrain warranties.

What is a Powertrain warranty?

Don’t be misled a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn’t promise a decade of free repairs for your car. It typically covers just the engine and transmission, along with any other moving parts that lead to the wheels, like the driveshaft and constant velocity joints. Some automakers also bundle seat belts and airbags into their powertrain warranties. With a few exceptions, powertrain warranties don’t cover regular maintenance like engine tuneups and tire rotations.

What is included in Roadside Assistance?

Some automakers include roadside assistance with their bumper-to-bumper or powertrain warranties, while others have separate policies. These programs cover anything from flat-tire changes and locksmith services to jump-starts and towing. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms (if you have to wait for repairs).

What other services could be included in a warranty?

Some automakers include free scheduled maintenance for items such as oil changes, air filters and tire rotations. Some include consumables including brake pads and windshield wipers; others do not. They are typically for the first couple of years of ownership of a new car.

What does CPO mean?

A certified pre-owned or CPO car has been inspected to meet minimum quality standards and typically includes some type of warranty. While dealers and third parties certify cars, the gold standard is an automaker-certified vehicle that provides a factory-backed warranty, often extending the original coverage. Vehicles must be in excellent condition and have low miles and wear to be certified, which is why off-lease vehicles feed many CPO programs.

2000 Subaru Outback Overview

Is the Subaru Outback hot, dry, sandy, and full of dangerous creatures? Well, no, but like Australia’s famed interior landscape, the 2000 Subaru Outback is a more rugged, hardy version of the more suburban Legacy, on whose platform it is based. Previously available as a Legacy trim, the 2000 Outback is now its own separate model in both a Limited sedan and three types of wagon — base, Limited, and Sport. Along with the Legacy this year, the 2000 Outback adds inches to its length and gets a retuned 2.5-liter boxer H4 engine that now hits 165-hp with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.

Full-time all-wheel drive is common to all Subarus, but the 2000 Outback distinguishes itself from the Legacy with an inch higher ground clearance, beefier 16-inch tires, larger foglights, and 2-tone body cladding that’s meant to take more punishment. Though not a true off-road vehicle, it can tackle tougher roads and weather than the Legacy. All of the Outbacks come standard with power features, cruise control, daytime running lights, ABS brakes, dual front airbags, and 24-hour road assistance, which is new this year. The Limited sedan and wagon add on side impact bags and more luxury features such as heated leather seats. Rear seats in all trims split-fold 60/40 for up to 68 cubic feet of storage and a cargo cover is standard.

The 2000 Outback also reinforces its body for a more stable and safer ride this year. Wagons are more popular than sedans, for the extra headroom, cargo space, and roof rack. The Sport wagon is actually based on the Impreza, and is sometimes included in that lineup. It has a less powerful 2.2-liter, 142-hp H4, and this year it gets a rear spoiler and cruise control. Rugged durability is what attracts 2000 Outback owners to this SUV alternative. Because it sits lower to the ground, it is more stable, and its car platform makes it easier to handle. However, drivers feel it needs more power, better gas mileage, and stronger brakes. There were also issues this year with blown head gaskets and failed oxygen sensors.

What’s your take on the 2000 Subaru Outback?

Vehicle overview

What recipe does an automotive manufacturer use to boost sagging sales? Ask any Subaru executive and she’ll tell you to take one part popular Australian movie star and one part advanced all-wheel-drive system. Stir in an undercurrent of SUV backlash with a dash of resurgence in the station wagon market, and behold: The perfect environment for a totally new Subaru Outback. Available in either wagon or sedan form, the Outback is Subaru’s answer to the question: Why would anyone want to drive an ill-handling, gas-guzzling, difficult to park SUV? With 7.3 inches of ground clearance, standard all-wheel drive and a base price in the low 20s, the Outback offers on-road practicality with off-road capability at a bargain price. While no match for the likes of Jeep’s Grand Cherokee or Toyota’s Land Cruiser in terms of hill climbing, the Outback can hold its own in light to moderate off-road situations without losing an oil pan or cracking a differential.

A Phase II 2.5-liter, 16-valve, 165-horsepower boxer engine powers both Outback models. By reconfiguring the engine’s valvetrain, Subaru squeezed a bit more torque from the 2.5-liter, upping the total to 166 foot-pounds @ 4,000 rpm. All models come with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Outback Wagon and Outback Limited Sedan come with both the four-speed automatic and Subaru’s Active All-Wheel Drive that can transfer power to the wheels that need it even before slippage occurs.

Additionally, all Outbacks receive four-wheel disc brakes, ABS, protective lower body cladding, a heavy-duty four-wheel independent suspension, and 24-hour roadside assistance as standard equipment. Opt for the Outback wagon and you’ll also get a 60/40 split folding rear seat, keyless entry, a 12-volt cargo area power outlet, a rear wiper/washer, and breakaway power side-view mirrors. Limited models, in sedan or wagon configuration, get leather upholstery, heated seats, a CD player, and a power moonroof (dual moonroofs on the wagon). Safety was another area where Subaru refused to skimp. The new Outback models feature a «Ring-Shaped Reinforcement» body structure for maximum protection against frontal, offset, side and rear impacts. Side beams in both the front and rear doors further enhance side-impact protection, but, regrettably, only the Limited models come with side airbags. These structural enhancements not only boost safety but also improve the Outback’s torsional strength by 20 percent. Combined with the new multi-link rear suspension and rubber-isolated subframe, the sedans and wagons offer superior handling and reduced road noise compared to last year’s models.

We like the fact that Subaru offers a viable alternative to the SUV. The Outback proves that safety, style and all-weather traction can be had in a non-truck-based vehicle, and at a reasonable price. Now if we could just get one of their turbocharged engines from Japan over here.

Love This Car For Its Ability And Cargo Space. — Hands down one of the best vehicles I’ve ever driven. Easy to see out all windows for backing and switching lanes. Lots of cargo space with back seats folding down flat. Sleep in it and view the stars while car camping. Tie cargo to the top or put a Yakima rack on it. Hauled a kayak on it frequently. Never used the tow but it looks like a nice package with the wiring inside the spare wheel space.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Great cross country or camping car! Handles extremely well.

Cons: Not much, although Outbacks were notorious for head gasket issues. I had mine redone in 2009. Wish it got better mpg.

Looking for a Used Outback in your area?

CarGurus has 34,528 nationwide Outback listings starting at $999.

Subaru Outbacks Are Rock Solid Cars For The Outdoor Enthusiast. — Fun car to drive, good acceleration and braking. Not as sporty as the smaller sport version, but definitely more reliable. Roof rack very nice for strapping gear down. The fold down flat back seats make packing very easy and spare tire easy access.

Primary Use: Family transportation

Pros: Great handling on all road conditions. Nice solid feel compared to most cars. Lots of storage for hauling your gear. Sleep in it and view the stars.

Cons: Head gaskets were a problem in many Subaru outbacks, and fairly spendy to fix. shop around for a good mechanic to keep up on maintenance.

I Will Own One For The Rest Of My Life! — If you live in the mountains, in lots of snow or just need a super reliable vehicle, own a Subaru. It’s commonly known that they last well over 300,000 miles and while the repairs can be expensive they are worth the investment for the future. They are not only super safe, really reliable, sporty and fun to drive, they are cars you can trust your teenager in as well as drive your newborn home knowing they may some day learn to drive that same vehicle.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: I will always love a Subaru! The economy, the value, the longevity and most important, the safety!

Cons: The few repairs that will need to happen can be expensive and require a specialist.

Don’t Hesitate To Buy! — Performance is peppy for a heavy car. Brake response is strong and stopping power is great. Handling is good, turn radius is what you’d expect from a car that size. Build quality is good. Materials are nice, hold up well. I think the styling is very nice. Cost of ownership is a little high. Parts aren’t cheap and there are some chronic parts of subaru’s that aren’t a matter of if but when they will fail. Gas mileage isn’t great but it is a heavy car with a 4 cylinder. Fun factor is great. I enjoy that I can take the car almost anywhere. Im not afraid to pull off the road anywhere or drive through a snow storm.

Primary Use: Commuting to work

Pros: Space and all wheel drive

Have You Driven the 2000 Subaru Outback?

What Drivers Are Saying

by Subaru Owner from Rhode Island — Ohio on Sat Apr 28 2012

I bought this car new and it has been great. I chose it for the look, handling and the AWD for New England winters when I was commuting quite a distance to work. It never failed me. I have had to do some minor repairs on the exhaust system and a torn CV boot and replaced the brakes and the hydraulic hatch opener thingies, but other than those smallish issues it has been smooth sailing. Complaints: the interior has way too few cupholders (yeah I know, that’s crazy to focus on but it actually has been an issue); the driver’s side mirror basically fell off pretty early on so there are some issues with the quality of the interior construction; the car holds on to moisture (it can fog up *on the inside* sometimes, which is weird- but it’s only happened a few times), but on the whole the car has been everything I wanted. It drives through deep snow like it’s nothing; it can haul a ton of stuff; passengers have loads of legroom; I can parallel park it with ease. It’s actually a really big (roomy inside) vehicle but it drives like a much smaller one — very manageable. The minimal (almost lack of ) «blind spot» is also great. I love my Subaru and will hate to sell it. hope that day doesn’t come for a while!

My husband picked it out for me to take the girls golfing and fit everything in and give me a safe and sporty ride. Living in Aspen I needed an AWD vehicle that offered comfort, reliability, room, pickup when needed, great handling and BOY this car gives you that! I put the mt. bike on, skis, or toss in the golf clubs and hit the road and ride in style knowing I will not have any problems with my car. NEVER HAVE! All I do is change the oil and do the basics! I love it!

by I Love Gretchen from Hagerstown, MD on Wed Apr 18 2007

Her name is Gretchen, and she is my 2000 Subaru Outback Sedan, Limited. She’s also the first car I’ve had that is worthy of a name. Once you drive an Outback, you’ll notice that they have a real personality and you’ll want to name yours, too. Let’s start with the interior. I’ve described it as «quietly luxurious and determined», which it is. The seats are comfortable (the seat heaters are incredible!), the driver’s seat has adjustable lumbar support, and the quality of leather is top-notch. At first glance, the interior may imply a prissy, over-priced luxury sedan, but that’s until you drive the car. Once inside, you find you fit perfectly into the well-designed cabin. Everything you need is within easy reach and is easy to use. You also gain the advantage of sitting in a higher position while driving, allowing better visibility. Don’t let the interior fool you, this car is tough. I’ve driven it over countless mountains and through every kind of weather on the East Coast. Not only will Subaru’s all wheel drive get you where you need to go, it will do it safely and quickly. When you drive this car, you feel like you’re in a tank — it feels that solid. Luckily, the car handles very well and maintains a luxurious and sporty feel. It has a good amount of power, good acceleration, and can be very surprising to passengers who think that Subarus are frumpy cars. My car is used for commuting and averages approximately 27 mpg. Keep in mind this is with full-time all wheel drive. There’s no need for a gas-guzzling SUV with cars like these on the market. Mechanically, I’ve never had a single problem with the car, and it has over 120,000 miles on it. I just keep up with basic maintenance and the car keeps going. All in all, this car is a winner. It’s luxurious without being overindulgent. It’s sporty without being arrogant. This car is everything you need, and then a few extra things to keep you happy. Definitely worth considering, I know I love mine!

TWO WORDS: HEAD GASKET. yes subarus are awesome cars, and all I even wanted was a subaru becuase all my buddies had one and all of them made it close to 300,000 miles or more. BUT BEWARE. the 2000 model was redesinged and the HEAD GASKET were designed poorly and they rupture and this repair job is almost 2,000 dollars and it will rupture again right around 50,000 miles after the first 2,000 grand leaves your pocket. THIS IS NOT JOKE! SUBARUS ARE AWESOME CARS JUST STAY AWAY FROM THE year 2000 model and you will be safe. Done belive me. type in Google, «Head Gasket blown in my 2000 subaru» and then talk to me. I have had the worst experience with this car and I am not alone. Google it and see.

Our Take on the 2000 Subaru Outback

When we tested Subaru’s so-called Sport Utility Sedan last year, we told you we thought it was a silly concept, worthy of that old huckster P.T. Barnum.

Apparently Subaru’s marketing wizards have seen the light, and have rechristened this otherwise competent all-wheel-drive sedan, which gets a substantial redesign for 2000 and a new name: The Outback Limited Sedan.

Subaru has made some notable mechanical improvements to the car, and loaded it up with all kinds of accessories. But is the $26,650 Outback Limited Sedan really superior to the regular Legacy Sedan, which lists for under $20,000?

She: I’ll answer that question right away. Save your money and go for the Legacy. Read More
